I would be interested in your comments on this post @Married*2*Dr*Jekyll. Especially to the point about a punitive schema (I have included a link assuming you are, perhaps, unfamiliar with schema therapy).

Can someone please clarify for me--in "strangulation" or rape porn, are the women actually being raped or is it more like a BDSM thing they're acting out? I've been upset about this since this thread started and would appreciate clarification. Thanks.

The concept of what you see is 100% false, and always the product of role playing (acting)....

(I'm assuming you are asking this, because you think if it were real, then these people would be arrested, and you are right, it is illegal and they would be arrested. But you still want to make sure the world works that way as a sanity check. You are right the world does work that way 'most of the time'.)

    (however....)

In strangulation, some of the actresses are being gagged, and air cut off for short periods of time. The actions you see aren't false, in that it is dangerous, and none of the women you see are 'enjoying it'. It's a violent symbol of power to reduce someone to nothing. The actresses at the time felt that level of abuse even though they choose to get through it to get paid. (Almost no one likes it, but there is the exception to every rule).

Almost all rape scenes are play acting. In fact, a signature that it's fake, is always when the idea that the women can 'give in' and reach ultimate powerful pleasure (perhaps even shown to crave it). Many of the women you see in the scenes are on drugs at the time to help them cope with how painful and undesirable the action being shown actually are. Some actresses really do get scared on screen. (No woman in real life have any pleasure from rape. Their body instinctively clamps shut and tries to force the invader out, and the sensations are of fear, violation, and pain. (This action of clamping shut, often leads to internal tearing, bruising, and bleeding) (I hesitate to mention this, because the worse will lock onto this), but rape victim can possibly receive an orgasm even if she has fought, and her body defend it. Most often this does not happen, as it is only pain, but when it does, it only deepens the sensations of disgust, violation, and lack of control. She feels 'broken' from that moment on, and unable to trust even her own body afterwards..

There is different levels of rape in real life, and some of what you see on screen might actually be a product of that, even if it's not a core concept to the video isn't rape:

    - A women in a relationship, or dating, or with prior sexual experience may choose in her rape to 'give in' and go along with it for the sake of her safety. It doesn't mean she wanted it, it doesn't mean she feels any less violated. She simply put on an act in hopes her abuser will shorten the invasion, and leave her less damaged. This is how 'rape' can happen in silence. Just because an implicit 'no' wasn't given, doesn't mean that a explicit 'yes' can be inferred. (So it is possible that a married woman can be raped by her husband).

    - Rape can occur when extreme manipulation occurred so that the women had no control to exercise her choice. A woman might be threatened with abuse (to her or her children), to lose her job, or other circumstance. Underage prostitutes fall in this category. So even if the intercourse seems to be consensual (and unforced), the fact that the circumstances leading to them to the intercourse, left them without the ability to say 'no', without substantial fear to their corporeal being.

    - Rape can occur when a person has been put in a situation where they can't exercise their choice. A woman that has been drugged perhaps unconscious, or in some medical conditions where they aren't in control over their choices, is still considered raped, even if they 'didn't struggle or say no'. This is why women prisoners who get pregnant are considered to have been raped by the male guards. They are in a place where they have no control over their lives, even if they did allow or possibly desire intercourse with the guard. Children also fall in this category, no matter if they 'desired' the event.

It's far safer to assume that everything you see on the web is 'false' 100%. But don't let that fool you into thinking that it's all above board and included moral approaches in its production. Because of the circumstances above, the videos can look consensual and still be considered rape.

    (warning possible triggers)

There have been cases, where the porn videos were used as proof of the wrong doing that has happened. A male porn actor (as director) went to jail because he starred in videos that were 'lolitas' (if you aren't familiar with the term, it's female actors that appear underage temptresses). Turns out many of the women that were in the videos were in fact underage. Another famous 80's porn star actress 'Traci Lords', made hundreds of videos and was very popular until it was discovered that she was actually 15 when she started. Meaning in the strictest definition all videos she made were child pornography.

Forgive me, I didn't check to see that you were a women, but instead assumed you might be a younger male needing reassurance. I would have taken a different approach had I first checked.

To re-iterate what I said earlier, yes, rape and strangulation are fiction with actors willingly choosing to follow a script. However some of the behavior shown does border on violence, and is still rough on those that participate.

The actresses that participate are 95% only there because of the money. There are those out there that crave a bit more fetish like intensity and role playing. But most all of the women in the videos aren't enjoying themselves, and sometimes the tears are real. (Still they did make a choice).

Rape and strangulation is still very illegal, and the videos would result in immediate prosecution in any case where a women had been treated that way without it being a role playing actress.

So if it brings ease, the world isn't getting away with dehumanizing women and them sending victory shots to the web. (The sad part is that those videos being false, don't actually subtract from the huge volume of actual rape and abuse that does go on in the real world.) But hopefully it lets you feel a little more relaxed in that the world isn't so messed up that people can do this and video tape it, and still be allowed to walk around free.

Thanks, @PositiveChange1974, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. I think there is some contradiction in what you're saying: "The concept of what you see is 100% false, and always the product of role playing (acting)..." and "Almost all rape scenes are play acting..." Which one is it? I'm still unclear but I'm understanding your point maybe is that the strangulation porn that people are talking about in this thread is just fantasy is all acted and not real assault? How is one able to tell if the woman is acting or being extorted? What are the signs that she's acting versus being assaulted?

Secondly, these statements are woefully naive: "Rape and strangulation is still very illegal, and the videos would result in immediate prosecution in any case where a women had been treated that way without it being a role playing actress." Unfortunately, that is not true. Ever heard of that "classic" movie Last Tango in Paris? The 19 year old woman in the infamous butter scene was raped, for real. The director told Brando to rape her to get it to be more real. Although criminal charges were filed, neither Brando nor Bertolucci went to jail. And, side note, Bertolucci developed the film from his sexual fantasies. The actress later said that the scene ruined her life. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reviewed 22 million images and videos of suspected child sexual abuse imagery in its victim identification program in 2013. Do you really think all the pedophiles who filmed those scenes were prosecuted? There's no way to tell how old someone is in a porn video. Traci Lords, one of the most famous porn actresses of all time was 16 when her photos first appeared in Penthouse--hardly an obscure, dark market magazine. In fact, when she quit her porn career, she had just turned 18. If someone can fake out Penthouse, I guarantee they can fake out PMOers.

Across the globe, between 60 and 100 million women are missing. Vanished. "When you hear that 60 to 100 million females are missing in the current population, we thought that number compares in the scope and size. And then you compare the slave trade at its peak in the 1780s, when there were 80,000 slaves transported from Africa to the New World, and you see there are now 10 times that amount of women trafficked across international borders, so you start to think you are talking about comparable weight." (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2010/aug/19/women-slavery-half-the-sky) And, it is estimated up to 3 million women are enslaved in sex trafficking. "There is no way to always tell the difference between “consensual” acts and “forced” acts in porn. Regular users of Internet pornography will very likely view material frequently that has been created during the trafficking of women and children." See http://stoptraffickingdemand.com/forced-acts-recorded/. So, to say "So if it brings ease, the world isn't getting away with dehumanizing women and them sending victory shots to the web...the world isn't so messed up that people can do this and video tape it, and still be allowed to walk around free," is not remotely the reality of the porn industry. If those missing women were all of the same race, religion, or nationality, we'd call that genocide. But because they're women, we call it pornography, prostitution, and the sex trade.

I appreciate your response, but for people to say all the rape scenes are acted and not real, and we're all adults, and no one gets away with dehumanizing women, is monumentally incorrect.

People watch those types of movies and shows because they like to see the "bad guy" get caught in the end, they want a positive resolution. And, the whole video isn't just an ongoing scene of someone getting murdered or sexually assaulted. If those genres of entertainment were just murder and mayhem with no resolution, I don't know that they'd be so popular.

You are absolutely correct. As it is very late for me, I'm not sure if this next bit will posses any more clarity than the last post.

This is a rather sensitive area, and I've tried to navigate it. However, I choose my message to downplay certain aspects, when I though you might be a young male in need of assurance. There are many here that have stumbled across imagery on the web which they are stunned by, and which they feel shame, remorse, and guilt for having watched. For those people, I feel the shame, remorse, and guilt indicate that they are innocent, and should be encourage to separate the fantasy from reality aspects, and let go to move on. I also thought it important to reinforce the idea that real rape is illegal and that it would be punished.

While I did so clumsily earlier, my original comments were an attempted to separate the circumstances of a rape scene, from the actual actions on camera. The idea and circumstance (how a woman behaves, and if she submits) is false. Those scenes often depict a fantasy circumstance as women being helpless (but somehow inviting), and somewhere in the sequence she become willing or even enthusiastic about the process. (This is always false). However, the actual actions while done for visual effect do often include real actions of grabbing a woman by the throat.

I also downplayed the real vs role play content aspects. The truth is that most videos that circulate on the popular porn 'hubs' have a review process, and those items that can deemed as child pornography, or real evidence of crime are removed and blocked. This leads to most of the common 'hubs' containing primarily content that is role playing (or as much as can be successfully judged). They do have a process where concerned parties can request content be reviewed and removed. (However, the web being the place of anonymity, and ever new opportunity, there are places where content can be submitted without this kind of review. They are not by design easy to access, but child pornography and real rape content can be found.) As you mentioned there is much content, where people can not tell what is real or not. In the example of Traci Lords, she possessed sexual attributes at a young age, and willingly engaged in the work, but was 15 at the time (so while it was illegal, it didn't appear to be). (While I think her situation was more of a technicality, there are many like the one you mentioned in the movie of the 19 year old, where others can't tell role play from real, or even worse, where scenes may look completely consensual and the actress may have been coerced into acting that way (which is still rape).

You are also correct that we live in a very imperfect world. I had tried to play up the illegality and offer some reassurance that rape is punished. Unfortunately, this is far from truth. While some rape is punished, most go unreported. We still live in a culture where the victim is blamed first, and the aggressor unless obviously guilty is still treated with more compassion. Many of the women in my life have had events occur. Some have been lucky and only been scarred, others haven't.

I wish I could assure you that the fantasy aspects of this were innocent and offered no harm in real life. Unfortunately, it will never be that simple. Most that do find this kind of fantasy material on the more common porn distribution sources, are simply getting role playing fantasies, and those that consume it are most likely just drawn by the intensity, or from low self esteem issues (but would never engage in that kind of violence). However, not everyone that is drawn to that is innocent, and they can choose to successfully pursue ever increasing amounts of 'real' and degrading content, as a supplement to the harm they do/intend to do in real life. The truth is that if they do this in real life, if they manipulate/abuse a girlfriend and don't make an immediate pattern of this, then they may very well get with it for quite some time. (I hate that part of reality).

In my own mind, I have chosen to focus on what I can influence, which includes helping advise people so that the innocent can move on, and aren't tempted by the false messages. I also chose to speak up and fight for women and their rights, and try to help dispel the victim blame culture in rape. However, I still see porn as a choice, and a freedom of expression, so I will never attack or see it as good or evil. There is defiantly things in the spectrum of porn that I find 'bad' and 'distasteful', and which I know come from amoral and harmful places. But I also believe there is much that contains beauty, helpful fantasy, and scenes of loving embrace. In my mind, sex exchanges through prostitution, erotica, play acting, and other channels are as old as time. I don't believe anyone can successfully attack those. However, I do believe we can raise the standards, by lifting some of the harmful ignorance and perpetuation of false standards in sexual relations, simply by speaking up and being willing to dive into taboo area with some open minded enlightenment.

I originally set out to provide some reassurance, on a subject that is far from reassuring. Perhaps all I've done is waste your time. I hope not. But in any case, I wish you a more peaceful day.

I've been married a long time. Happily.
I know it's hard to hear a contrary opinion, especially on something that has such scary implications.
But the question is not trivial: should you be your husband's accountability partner?
Do you choose to trust him? Or to control him? Are you his wife, or his mother?
Some insight on the subject by people with letters after their names:

  9. Choosing to trust someone who is lying is just foolish. Everything I am doing is based on professional advice. I am also following guidance from a very good book called 'moving bryond betrayal. The five step boundary solution for partners of sex addicts'
I am going to ask and you dont have to answer if you dont wish to but are you in the beginning stage if dealing this and havent disclosed to your wife yet? If so it is very easy to be in denial and negate the effect your addiction has on her and through projection the impact my husbands addiction has on me. I am still in the hypervigilence stage which is very normal after ths stage of discovery.

Hypervigilence is the checking up on their activity to see if they are acting out or lying. It is a safety behaviour. I do it to try and see if he is being honest or not. He isnt and so I keep me and the kids safe by setting boundaries. He cant live with us whilst still lying.

I am not his accountability partner. That could never happen. My husband only lies about his addiction and other women to me. He is going to SA and will get one there I hope.

Concealing your addiction is part of the precontemplation stage of addiction. You don't move into recovery without full disclosure. Anyhoo thats just my 2 cents.

I do work with addiction with families in therapy but thay does not mean I am able to apply it to myself. I am expriencing trauma in a normal way and seeking support online, through friends and family, through private psychotherapy for trauma and through educating myself on the specifics of sex and porn addiction (its all new to me I mainly work with psychosis, drug addiction, alcoholism and eating disorders).

I am a human. I have been hurt. I can be wrong and often am.

I wouldn't go about life by using extracts from books as guidance.
Unless it is an equally unbiased viewpoint of both sides then it's not worth using as a guide as it will only skew your reasoning and opinions.

Instead just use your gut. Think freely.
Judge each scenario off your own initiative. Not a book.
