    Hello everyone.

You know what triggers me the most? Academic or professional hard work.

I can go easy 1 month without porn if I'm in vacations, doing whatever I want. But as soon as I got in front of any task that requires me to analyze deeply some question, I can't concentrate until I get my "porn medication'.

After sometime not using porn, last week I used porn almost daily in order to be able to finish my undergraduation thesis. This sucks because if I don't use porn I can't get things done at all...

    Anyone with similar triggers?

What I have discovered is that after a month and a half of no PMO my ability to concentrate is becoming better. When I have an impulse to watch porn it is very difficult to work through because it is a complete and total distraction for a time. It wants my full attention which, curiously enough I never had difficulty in maintaining. However, constantly interrupting my train of thought and my work flow to watch a video or two or whatever is a reinforcement of this Porn induced attention deficit disorder. It wont go away or lessen its power unless you fight back in some way. Its not at all easy but that has been my observation. If your going to get distracted enough to take you away from your legitimate task, then get distracted. But go make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead of beating off. In other words, allow the distraction but change the distraction in some fundamental way. Your still getting a reward just in a different form.

Your brain requires huge energy and blood supply to function. Academic work taps it hard at times (plus habit) and you've got trouble. I guarantee porn isn't helping you concentrate if you can't with without doing it. I feel you though. Been there. It'll follow you to work. Be warned. You don't have to look far on here to find people who have suffered at work as a result of this need to pause and regain focus. Good luck. You won't regret taking the issue seriously I wager.

Agree with you. I will try the first option first, it is: try to maintain the focus even when the distraction come. If it doensn't work I will try to replace my distraction habit of using porn for something else.

    Hey,
im not sure I can help you as much as someone that has similar triggers, but still, read me :
Im trying to quit smoking (and pmo at the same time, which some may find risky hehe) since many months now. Ive gone through this kinda situation, but what I needed most was a fag... Still happens, but less than the last month though. What ive learnt is, in those moments, rather tryna get your wanting of P away, you should try to replace this medication by another one. Instead of a cig ? an apple, a chewing gum, brushing teeth, whatever ; Instead of pmo ? you surely have something that can replace it, think bout it... It's all about giving it new tries.

    @h215,
I found that while I was PMO'ing, any kind of work on the computer was slowed down by my "multitasking" AKA browsing porn while doing the work.

Porn gets you anxious after a while and you get a lack of sleep due to long pmo sessions. Then porn temporarily cures anxiety, so you need porn to feel good. A nasty vicious circle.

Without porn, I can concentrate better, focus my thoughts, get better sleep, etc...in the end, I'm more productive and anxiety is pretty much gone. I'm in better shape to accomplish stuff and tackle challenges.

I fully agree with you... Problem with replacing the "porn medication" for something else is that anything I've tried until now has helped me to better concentrate when I go back to hardwork, I mean, even though I go for a cup of coffe, go for exercise or just lay down for 10 minutes, when I come back to hard work I stil feel the urges to watch porn...

So the thing is not just trying to replace it for something else, instead, we should accept this mind state until it weakens over time I think. But again, as you said, "its a lot easier said than done".

Anyway, one thing that usually work out is to hang out with friends and socialize instead of using porn, this is a good replacement for me...

    Cheers

Thanks for your kind words my friend, I'm pretty aware that porn is the cause instead of the cure of my concentrations problems.

Congratulation as well for you journey, I'm on the way...

You are convincing yourself that porn is required to concentrate. I had some similar advice given that once u masturbate, ur mind can be fully focussed on the subject. This is a great fallacy and I wish someone could have given contrary advice.

I have the exact same problem. When first found porn and started pmo it was in the days of dial up so it wasn't really a big deal. You wasn't too addicted because a movie or clip was out of the question. When high school started i had high speed, and when i wanted a break from school work or stress i used porn. Soon porn became the go to in the beginning so i would use then i might work. It soon got to the point where any work would stress me out and i would have something in my mind that would make me want to do anything else but work. Even reading was a choir. This went later in life of course and caused many problems down the road. You have taught yourself, unknowingly, reward then work instead of work then reward. It will be hard but you have to learn how to go without porn.

@nitsuj0786, i think you have hit the nail on the head here, "reward then work instead of work then reward"

That's really helpful and motivating to read. It's day 2 of joining this community.I lack concentration as well.In last 7 years I've hardly managed 2 days without porn or masterbation. I'm trying to stay active here and it's really helping.Do you have any other suggestions to approach a situation where you might end up craving for PMO again?

I feel exactly the same. If I am demanded a job or think about writing something academia-related... PMO triggers become truly tought... I recently quit my job as I could not go on like this, broken into 2 between complying with work-related demands and stress and use of porn, and wanting to quit and be clean and aware.
It's tough... I just did a 7 day streak, a record for me, but I basically did nothing productive in the meanwhile, just playing pc games and watching movies. I hope it gets better, as I do not think this can go on for long.
    Any suggestions fellows?

You probably don't like what you're doing. You feel stressed about it or feel stress while you're doing it which is a type of emotional pain - therefore you need to medicate yourself with porn. You probably developed your porn addiction when you felt a similar kind of emotional pain when you were younger and so the brain circuit between that state of mind and masturbation developed and became stronger and stronger with practice. Until the point of - you can't feel the pain without medicating yourself.
You can try to be mindful of this whole process and of your trigger. In my experience physical exercise helps with concentration and can get your mind off porn. Push-ups are a good start.
Also meditation can help you find the source of your trigger - probably one or several events in your childhood in which you felt emotional pain and medicated with porn that are now imprinted in your subconscious - the brain circuits that I mentioned above.
Don't despair - brain pattern and triggers can actually heal - you just need to do some more work :)

Take something interesting and which you never had time during your job , read about it, work on it, talk to people about it. Movies and games are addictive in themselves and can suck up your time easily
