Internet Usage

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by LoyalCanadian, Apr 14, 2016.

  1. Hello. I have seen some posts on Reddit recomending NoFap users to go on the internet less or abstain from it completely some days. I am wondering what you guys think of this.

  2. Whatever works for you. Moderating screen time all around is a wise choice, the internet included.

As for fasting for days at a time from the internet, well if you have that luxury go for it! Tech fasts are definitely something I have tried and will try again.

I cannot go without the internet right now as I need to be applying to jobs daily for instance. However once I secure a new job surely I could try fasting from the internet before I start it.

I think everyone would do well to go up to a week without using the internet to see how attached to it they are.

  3. Here is a user (no longer active) whom practiced what he called 'tech celibacy' 24 to 48 hours a week. Abstained from all electronics I believe. Definitely would be healthy for your mind and body.

Here is his profile if you care:

  4. Well what I am going to do is be more conscious of my screen time and internet usage. The only problem is I like to look at posts from NoFap and I like to watch funny YouTube videos. This distracts me from porn.

  5. I don't see that as a problem if it is keeping you from watching porn, not in early recovery. Being conscious sounds like a great idea. Mindful use can be just as beneficial as abstaining for a day.

Be careful of side bar videos on youtube (on a PC the videos on the side sometimes can trigger) and scantily clad imagery in funny videos. I'm not going to go so far as to say turn on safety mode but do be careful.

  6. Do you have YouTube Red?

I was thinking of checking out their show Prank Academy. Probably more shock value than giggles though.

Watching Daredevil on Netflix right now.

  7. This is something I need to do, less internet. I am actually planning to add this "internet fasting" to my habits once my existing habits gets going, cos can't add too much at once, I burn out. Anyways, I am planning to start with one day a week ate weekend and then both weekends. The eventually slowly restricting access to browsers other days of the week, at certain time of day. So yea, this is on my list. But it's just for my general well being. For NoFap specifically doing this? I guess it gives you less triggers to deal with. Cos there is a lot of those at internet. definitely can be a good thing.

Daredevil was awesome! Have you seen Jessica Jones? That's pretty cool show too! I'm also excited for Luke Cage is September and I hope that Punisher gets his own Netflix series! He's such a cool character!

  8. Ya The Punisher character was great. I was disappointed with Elektra, nowhere near as good as the Punisher episodes.

I was reluctant enough to start watching DD and probably will not get around to JJ. I watched one episode of JJ did not really enjoy her character in all honesty but I like the actress.

  9. No. I like watching things like Vines, pranks and documentaries. A channel I like to watch on YouTube is McJuggerNuggets. Now I find that some of these videos give a dopamine rush similar to the one I get when I watch porn even though these videos are in no way pornographic or anything close to that. Is that bad and should that be avoided?

  10. Lmao nice channel name.

    Sounds ok in moderation.

  11. I think the biggest time waster for me is Instagram because I spend so much time looking at images.

  12. Yea, I felt the same way for first few episodes, but I stuck to it and eventually started liking her character more and more. They can't really do very in depth character development in just one episode, all they can do is just give you first impression. The biggest fun I had was with the Purple Man tho. I wanted him to win over Jessica. But hey, it's a comic TV show, bad guys always lose in comics. Ah, maybe one of those days...

It's impossible or something :( Long story short I went 30 days without internet!
It's helpful for sure I didn't realize how its a addiction until I was on day 3 lol. When I was not on the internet life was more mundane in a way but lively at the same time , I was reading more
calling people on the way home from work, stronger eye contact, my thought patterns were somewhat different. I can't exactly pin point it but over use of internet makes people less social, people are stuck to there phones. Yeah it's understandable person checking email weather ect when there by themselves Okay but when I see people walking there kids or on the playground instead of watching and enjoying there kids growing up there stuck to the phone. It's like its making people numb. Theres a book called brave new world and in it are these walls which are basically big tvs that interact with you to give people joy and headphones they call sea shells or something that play crazy music to distract you and escape you from your feelings and negative emotions .
Internet has a lot of useful things but at the same time it pushes us away from what we need to. It's a useful tool but all of us including myself use it for an escape. I noticed a lot of days I would only have an hour or so of free time and instead of reading something , I would watch someones video on youtube about something that I already know or something dumb.
Have you noticed how we have all these information now and people are becoming dumber in a sense, more numb.
Have you noticed when you call someone they don't call you but text you or when you tell them to call you they text you or write to you on a social platform. Understandable you can't make a phone call in every situation so a text is better but all the time. Come on really

I like the internet for resources like this site which would not be possible without it but I think we need to reevaluate on how much time and on what where spending our time on.
Life is short , were not gonna be here forever guys lets do it right!

Fantastic work on being free from the internet for such a long period of time!

I agree with every single word.

I'm currently limiting myself from Facebook, 20 minutes a week in total, and it's very hard, let me tell you. I've noticed my interaction in real life has increased dramatically, and I find myself with alot more spare time too.

    Highly recommend as an alternative.

I'm also familiy with Huxley's book A Brave New World. One of my favorite literature of all time, highly recomend 'Animal Farm' and '1984' though i enjoyed A brave new world far more i must admit.

The last summer I tried to don't use the smartphone for one week, maybe this summer I will try to don't use Internet for a month!
    Thanks for the idea!

  16. Yeah man, give it a try, this summer I'mma do a month or two of no Internet.
It's frustrating when you read everything and want to do everything but you don't do anything because your constantly on the internet. Lol
    Godbless you bro
Were all gonna make it in this stuggle, not only NoFap but everything else in life
