    Hi Guys

Wondered what people’s views are of the work of the psychologist Jordan Peterson? He seems to be mentioned a lot on these forums and is certainly an interesting character.

On one hand he is quite inspiring and his lectures covering Jung and Freud seem really interesting. His book is also worth a read, however from what I can see he is quite transphobic and he is very willing to condemn “postmodernism” without really understanding what it means.

Love to hear your thoughts guys.

( I know he is a quite polarising figure but if we could do this without being to argumentative that would be nice!)

It's when England became good at cricket. Maybe if Jordan Peterson played cricket Canada would actually qualify for the World Cup.

Whenever I feel completly lost, I tend to watch his stuff. And whenever I watch his stuff, he lays out perfectly what is currently going on with me and he provides a clear path to a better situation. So, in other words, he helped me a shit ton of times, when stuff became really dark.

I wouldn't say transphobic. He doesn't hate Trans people. He just holds a rigid belief in human biology.
How do you know he doesn't understand what postmodernism means?

Okay, seriously... JP is no hero and no villain. I've listened to some of his the things he's said and nothing he says is new.

Greg Boyd did a blog series on 12 Rules for Life and I thought it was rather fair. He also talked about it on his podcast which can be found here and the links to his blog series can be found below the audio.

Here’s my honest opinion. He is a mix of both. I read his book 12 rules of life, and that is part of the reason why I am here. I also listen to his lectures and in one of them, he said that porn is a huge problem because its widely available and the only way to beat the addiction is to find something more meaningful. Peterson is blunt, he is ruthless, he is the guy that tells you that you suck and you better get back up and improve yourself.

Here’s my problem with him; his politics, which is right wing. I have no problem with him telling me to clean my room but when it comes to him denying that hate speech isnt real, and protected classes should not exist, thats where I lose it.

Would you call it transphobic to say that transgenderism is biologically impossible? Just out of curiosity.

How do you know he doesn't understand what postmodernism means?[/QUOTE]

He seems to think postmodernism is an extension of Marxism, which is just wrong. I read a lot of Derrida and Foucault at university and whilst they are confusing and complex, they didn’t just rebadge Marxism as he seems to suggest in some of the videos I’ve seen. Maybe there’s more too it, but to me he seems to misunderstand it.

He's not a villain. He often sticks his neck out in a heroic way, but he's of course not perfect, nobody is.

I've met him in person, both at an airport and briefly after one of his lectures. He's very genuine and means everything he says. He's very emotional, which has its pros and cons.

I’m no expert on the science on it, and to be perfectly honest I believe it should be between the person and their medical professionals as to whether they want to transition.

However I would say it’s quite offensive that Peterson denies their right to exist, claiming it’s not a real thing. Just a bit odd really, live and let live imo.

But would you say its transphobic to state that its biologically impossible?

I don't watch much JP, so what do you mean here? I mean, its not denying their right to exist to say that its impossible to "transition"?

I don't think Jordan Peterson is transphobic. It's very easy to spread false rumors these days.

However, I have not heard everything Jordan Peterson has ever said, so it's possible that I could be wrong. @Senecathestoic since you started this thread, I think the burden of proof is on you. Why don't you try to find some actual quotes from Jordan Peterson where he's actually being transphobic? And not quotes that have been taken completely out of context.

There's a big difference between denying someone's right to exist and saying that transitioning is biologically impossible. When saying something is biologically impossible, it means that you can mess with your hormones all you want, you can do as many plastic surgeries as you like, and you'd still be the gender you were born, because there are some things you simply can't change. This isn't denying a person's right to exist as a person, whatever shape or form they take. This is saying they can't claim to be something they aren't.

  17. The term "transphobic" is actually not a word in the English language.

It's a propaganda trick to add the suffix "-phobic" to some other term to imply a non-existing medical condition - because that's what a phobia is.

Declaring people mentally ill who don't believe in the ruling ideology has a long history, going back to the beginnings of the soviet union.

JP is not "transphobic" as far as i can tell. He has made this point over and over again. He is against legislation which makes it a crime to use or not use language in a certain way. He feels this is an attack on free speech, which is one of the most valuable and precious freedoms we enjoy. Legislating what you can and cannot say is wrong, and it is setting a very dangerous precedent.
I saw him on a panel show with a woman (born as a man) JP was asked what pronoun he would address her with and without hesitation he said "she".

  19. I know what you mean, he is an interesting and polarising character for sure. The most useful thing I get from listening to him is the sense of motivation to do something with your life as a man. On the other hand, the more I listen to him, it doesn't get me anywhere unless I stop watching his videos and figure out and do something 'productive' with my life - the biggest challenge for me as I have been addicted to PMO for 15 years. He mentioned in order to break out of porn habits you need to find something better and think how worse your life could be living the same way for the next 3 to 5 years. He gives great advice but I think as with all motivational speakers or 'gurus', less is more because they are essentially doing what they are doing in order to make a living too, so be careful not to get addicted to listening to such people and focus on doing something in the real world.. I'm working on it and failing but I still listen to Peterson occasionally for that bit of advice and motivation.

Absolutely. All the motivation we get from such videos isn't worth anything, if we don't get up then and do something with it. Laying in bed motivated hasn't helped anyone yet as far as I'm concerned^^
