Any behaviour is healthy if it is not used to escape some emotional pain (fear, rejection, loss and other emotions that are causing depression).

What this means is that as long as you do not play games to run away from reality, then all is good. But if you play games for long times because you are angry or bored or frustrated, then you have the issue of running away from reality through an escaping behaviour.

This applies not only to games, but also masturbation and other behaviours.

With masturbation, as long as you do it to explore what makes you feel good, it is perfectly fine and healthy. But if you use masturbation to fall asleep or because you were just rejected or because you are bored, then that's not healthy.

I hope my answer helps you! :)

I find the idea of repressing hobbies quite bad. Everybody needs some time for themselves.

I used to play video games...a lot. I started playing video games when my parents bought me the original Xbox when I was about four years old.

People might advise you "everything in moderation", yet I would advise not playing video games at all. I used to play video games for sometimes 12-16 hours per day...of course, that wasn't the worst of it. I also used to play PMO types of games on the computer much later on. Look, it's just not worth it, man. Take it from me, I've wasted thousands of hours of my life that I will never get back on video games. If I could restart my life over again with the knowledge I have now, I would not under any circumstances play video games. They pretty much ruined my life when combined with PMO in my teen years. I never had any friends, I had to go to therapy and I never had any relationships with girls who were my age (like a girlfriend). I'm not sure how old you are, yet the lesson still prevails: don't waste your time on video games, B.moussa.

All that video games do is take away your time. Video games give you nothing as a reward. Video games are also releasing lots of dopamine, which is not a good thing because then you become desensitized to the outside world after playing them. The children of today who grew up playing video games on an iPad or whatever will definitely have some serious concentration and emotional issues before they even get to be my age due to their constant use of video games which is releasing lots of dopamine all the time. Just don't play video games, man. I'm trying to sell a video game console that I bought a few months ago. I regret buying it now like how I regret wasting so much time playing video games. Just don't waste your time on video games, as they are not something that'll ever give anything back to you. They just drain energy and time from you.

  8. I like video games a lot, though the ones I prefer did not release enough dopamine to compete with P.

I guess that if someone is really addicted, then they should quit. Alcoholic should not drink alcohol. At worst days of my depression when I was actually using video games for escapism I wasn't playing more than 4 hours a day. Now I have no problems with them and when I don't have time I just don't play, when I have some free time I want to spend with myself I could play. In my opinion social media are much bigger problem if we are talking about wasting time and PMO risks.

It had to go. Personally, gaming fed my ego, no different from porn. It's just not good for self improvement. It's like the reverse of it.

I disagree when it comes to video games. I mean some people like to unwind from a stressful day by watching TV, some prefer to Read and others prefer to Game....... Just don't let the gaming control you. For example, I can easily play for only 1 hour and be done for the day..(I play path of exile, an online video game, but I play solo). To me, it gives me something to look forward to after a long stressful day at work. You can still fit in getting outside and going to the gym etc.... But if you are one who can't play a game without getting addicted to it and have it ruin your life, then by all means, absolutely don't play them...

For me video games were definitely an escape from my reality, from dealing with my issues. I used them to numb out from my emotions and was totally addicted. It was a definite cross addiction with pmo. It had to go for me. It's been 15 months since I decided to cut it out. I relapsed one time in those 15 months, I played for an hour or maybe an hour and a half. I think it's all about being honest with yourself. You will know better than anyone else if it's something you need to cut out of your life. Good luck on your journey.
