Is it possible to watch Game of Thrones without relapsing?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by seek_red, May 25, 2019.

  1. So here is the thing. I am doing nofap. Now I never watched GoT before and I really want to, but the thing is I know there's a lot of sexual content. I know that a lot of my friends watch GoT, but I don't know if they PMO after watching it. I really want to watch it though, because I heard it's a great show.
Now I know that some people say you can watch censored version of use a censor tool, but the thing is, I am questioning if I should. I know that triggers could cause relapse and relapses are bad, but we live in a trigger-filled world, and the goal of nofap is for us to deal with triggers and urges and not relapse to it. So I kinda want to watch the uncensored version, not for the sex scenes, but just as a challenge to learn not to relapse to triggers. After all, I know that many of my friends watch the uncensored version. Any advices?

  2. Take my advice with a grain of salt since the show bothers me beyond what I'm going to discuss here. My roommates watched all however many seasons recently and I found that I just couldn't be around when they were watching the show. Part of it was the graphic violence (I don't handle that very well) and part of it was the triggers. They're pretty regular occurrences in the show.

You mention that you might want to treat it as a challenge, sort of to see if you can deal with the triggers and not relapse and I have a couple of concerns with that. First, the triggers in Game of Thrones are not like the triggers you normally experience while living in the world. In your everyday life, you might see a beer commercial with some scantily clad models or a condom ad where it's implied that two characters have sex. These are the triggers that it's important to learn to deal with through nofap. But the Game of Thrones' triggers are more than just implied sex--they're actual sex scenes.

Tying into this, you should consider where you are in your nofap journey. Judging by your counter, it looks to me like you're near the beginning. Even though Game of Thrones' level of sex may be something that you want to be able to watch eventually and not give in to PMO, you may not be ready to handle that level of sex now and watching the show on a regular basis may jeopardize your progress. To make an analogy, if you're out of shape and starting a workout routine, you wouldn't throw yourself into an athlete's workout regimen. Not only would you be hard pressed to complete the workouts, but you would be at risk of injuring yourself and then you would be in worse shape than you were in before! Instead, you would start with exercises that are easy for most people and as you get stronger, you would increase the intensity. This is a similar situation. Learn to deal with life's small triggers first. Even if dealing with small triggers is easy for most people, there's no shame in saying "I'm gonna start with the easy stuff and get to the hard stuff later. Not only that, but I'm going to isolate myself from the really challenging stuff so that I can really focus on learning the easy stuff." Saying that takes courage and commitment.

To summarize, I guess I would point out that first, Game of Thrones' triggers aren't like other triggers you might encounter in your day to day life. Second, even if you want to get used to those kinds of triggers eventually, now might not be the best time to do that. Ultimately, you have to decide what to do with this. There are plenty of things that I don't know about you and maybe this advice isn't super relevant for you, for one reason or another. But hopefully this will help you make a more informed decision about whether or not to get into the show.

lol when I discovered Nofap I actually took a few years off watching the show mainly because id forgotten about it but also didn't wanna see any triggers. However ive finished it now. Its up to you at the end of the day, its a great show for the most part but there is a lot of nudity in it and many times the nudity feels pointless, like it wasn't really needed but they decided to just put it in there anyway.

Thankfully im not watching any shows now since ive finished GoT and don't have to worry about these types of things anymore.

  4. I see. Do you feel particularly disturbed by the nudity, or do you just watch past it without paying any special attention

Thanks for the advice! I guess I will wait for a while as my streak lengthens and see what happens.

After Nofap I usually either put my hand over the screen to block it out or I just skip ahead a few minutes.

Dont watch if you feel the sex or nudity scenes would bother and trigger you. Its my reason to not watch it too, cause I know it would trigger me. Yesterday I started to watch "Sinking of Laconia" and it has a porn scene, I immidiately stopped to watch because I would have ended up stopping the movie and search for porn. I realized we have to accept that we cant watch anything because of triggers... Being on nofap is really a change of lifestyle, and to recover we have to skip some things, even if we are crazy about them.

    Seekred - I agree with Phoenix9 - I would avoid it.

GoT is one of the reasons I relapsed - not only are there sex scenes but they also explore some fetishes which might trigger you. You can avoid most of them but sometimes the scene changes quite quickly...

  13. If you watch violence or gore on TV, you know, it's just fake, and there is no problem. But if you look at naked women, you're in reality looking at her, and you have a problem. Stay, thirsty, my friend.

Yes, it is possible to watch Game of Thrones without relapsing. But it is not recommended for people who just started their NoFap journey.

Hi brothers! I'm in the 210th clean day!
I want to watch Game of Thrones movie with my wife, but it has some nude scenes. My wife and I close our eyes while watching its nude scenes!! Does watching that movie affect our relationship?

I was told when you are young in your journey of no PMO it is most ideal to set very narrow guard rails. I was under the impression when I started a month ago that I needed to have access and challenges put right in front of me to train my brain to say no. This is the furthest thing from the truth. You will get better by simply having no access or staying away from things that will cause you to struggle and then when you feel 100 percent better months from now maybe you can explore the idea of watching the show. But be careful because even though you maybe be clean from PMO for months, it doesn't guarantee that we are free forever.
