Is pornography immoral?

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by Paperweight, Mar 30, 2018.

  1. I think broadly speaking, yes it's immoral, we know that from the start and perhaps was part of the attraction to it in the first place, the whole 'forbidden fruit' 'don't press this button' analogy. Maybe to make this question more complex is to see that there are 'some' producers out there who have convinced themselves and others that the content they produce is somewhat 'ethical' or moraly correct in terms of the way they supposedly treat their performers etc. then there are the downright 'don't give a monkeys just gimme your cash' types who will have no conscience about exploiting their performers or customers.

Would you consider a piece of artwork depicting a naked female as immoral? or would it simply be art for the sake of expressing the beauty of the natural human body? but then with that there is a level of thought different from that of an obscene pornographic picture, one is designed to spark discussion for the sake of appreciating the artistic work and other is designed to titilate and excite you into parting with your money.

I don't believe there is anything immoral or shameful about the natural human body or creating work that represents it for artistic or reference puposes but it's the commercial model which has given way to such wide spread abuse which shapes peoples attitudes. The fact people buy it and sell it, when there's big sums of money involved you get corruption, exploitation.

I believe some of the most immoral things about porn, especially in todays world is the ease of access to it for minors, which could be prevented by the production companies yet they choose not to because they know the younger they get users hooked on their content the more likely they are to have a long term customer. Also the way the performers are treated in the industry is very poor and there is almost zero acknowledgement by these companies about the impact their products have on their users, the negative effects, how they effect the mental health, relationships and life prospects of the users, they do nothing to fund proper education

It's a disease of humanity, the exploiting of each other for profit. I don't think we can ever get to a place where pornography can become a completely harmless and innocuous thing and for that reason it is immoral. It causes more problems than it solves

How about this question...are guns immoral, or is it the people that use them? (slowly retreats as the can of worms is opened:emoji_thinking:)

    He's giving his opinion.

I think the core of @Bottomofthemap's message is that society plays a critical role in shaping the kind of adults we become. Therefore, expectations and programmes should be in place to ensure that as many young people as possible develop the good character and health necessary to hit the ground running and engage with their community in a useful way. For their own sakes as well as their community's: people need purpose and a sense of belonging.

However, he observes that our society currently allows many children to idly waste their youth, cushioned in comfort, not developing character that will later benefit them, but instead developing destructive habits that will impede their adult lives forever more.

His post also suggests to me that parents who allow their children to develop destructive habits (whether that be a drug habit, porn habit, or reclusive video gaming habit) are failing in their duty of raising their children into healthy, useful, well-adjusted adults.

He isn't saying that people should be forced to do manual labour on an oil rig, he's already explained that the oil field involves a huge range of jobs. But regardless, focusing on the detail of his (casually suggested) remedy is missing the real substance of his post, which is the problem that he sees in society.

  3. Maybe it's just me but I find a certain irony that someone who presumably has his own problem with wanking addiction (or why else be on here?) should come and pass judgement on people that he doesn't know.

To me that just looks like trolling. People who troll get their jollies being obnoxious to people they don't know. If I was a moderator I'd delete such posts. Such posts don't help the people who come here for support.

I don't think @Bottomofthemap's intention was to insult people on this forum who, like him, wish to rid themselves of porn addiction or else help others to do so.

It seems that one of his reasons for opposing pornography is his perception that it engenders passivity and dependency in young men. He describes men in this state as "pussies", is that crass? Maybe. Is it inaccurate? Maybe not.

May be no intention... But it is a destructive message in a support group. I had done that mistake and was thrashed by a member. What I learnt is this is a place where vulnerable people come for help. Being constructive is better. Perhaps a trait to learn along with recovery.
    My 2 cents....

Not word for word on that definition. However, relating to morality - this is an accurate picture of how I think about it - "Moral nihilists assert that there is no inherent morality, and that accepted moral values are abstractly contrived".

  7. Some my-pseudo-philosophical view: For something to be immortal, it has to be alive first. Porn isn't alive, however, it's created by life beings, people, whose individual lifespan is short, but when thinking of them as a society, they are immortal. Then, porn's immortality derives from the immortality of the human race. Ergo, we should exterminate all humans to be sure that porn disappears. The worst case scenario: goats or sheep that play in porn movies will begin to videotape they own. They we'll have to exterminate them as well. The problem is that after our extermination there will be no one to annihilate them. Then, the porn will most probably outlive our immortality... what's wrong with me?
