Great post and video. Thank you for sharing. I was getting into poor me victim thinking tonight and needed this wake up call. "Don't ever, ever ring the bell" seems doubly appropriate here.

The idea is good but seriously, should we really listen to such advices from a US army admiral ???

The US army is the biggest terrorist the world has ever seen. He's talking about Irak.. What did they do in Irak ? Kill 300.000 civilians, destroy a whole country, and now he wants to give us advices on how to change the world ? Well if he's talking about changing the world to make it horrible, then he probably knows what he's talking about. Otherwise, i don't think i'll listen to such a man. I want to become a good man, change the world positively.

Thanks, NewJackSwing1983 that video was INCREDIBLE. I intend to make my bed everyday from now on.
    Again, thank you for posting.

SilentYouth - Good advice is good advice. What does it matter the source or the messenger? REMEMBER, FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

  4. @SilentYouth - I get your point (I'm very anti-war, myself), but that is not at all what he's talking about. He's talking about the lessons he learned during Navy SEAL training, and how they can be applied to our everyday lives. By using these principles, he made it through the toughest time in his life. I want to apply these same things to my tough time, which is right now!

Take it or leave it, but if you're waiting for a perfect person to give you advice, well... you're not gonna find one. Even if you're at least taking some advice from us fellow fapstronauts, guess what? We're all porn-addicted masturbaters!

At the very least, make your bed. And never, EVER ring the bell!

Yes. Making your bed is nice because you come back at night to a made bed. You're taking good care of yourself.
Yes. If you did nothing else right that day, at least you made your bed. Feel better.

No. Einstein never learned to comb his hair, Alexander Fleming left dishes in the sink for weeks, and Benjamin Franklin couldn't keep his pants on. They still did some big, world-changing things.
So, no. I don't know why this statement was included.

Good advice on the whole though.

Take care of the little things and the big things take care of themselves is pretty sound (if basic?) advice. Its just a crying shame that guys like this are so utterly misguided/brainwashed and actually proud of the complete and utter disastrous and murderous mess they make of the big things (like Iraq and Afghanistan just to mention a couple that he mentioned himself!) so unfortunately it really is difficult to stomach that collosal level of sheer hypocrisy, ignorance, and arrogance (and thats nothing whatsoever against the intentions of the original poster etc).

'Continue to soil your bed and one night you will suffocate in your own waste'~ Chief Seattle

...sound advice from a REAL American.

  7. People seem to be getting confused about the point of this post. This is NOT about WAR. It is about Navy SEAL training. Nowhere in this speech did he actually promote the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, though he was a part of them.

That hand signal is not Illuminati. It is based of the University of Texas mascot, longhorn cattle. The fingers represent the horns. It's a local sports thing...

Fair points (and I removed my comment about the hand signal because this is probably not the time or place to debate the double entendres associated with that particular hand signal;))

I guess that just by default guys like him promote certain values and ideals that are naturally going to push a fair few buttons all considered:)

You're right. That's a much better way to take it. It's just when the platitude is flung at a young person from an external source, it has the effect of being quite discouraging. Military discipline is not for everyone.

Additionally, Admiral William McRaven is a member of the Millitary -- they do not determine which wars they fight in.

I was a bit unsure if I should watch this video based on some of the responses in this thread, but I did, and I'm glad I did. The advice seems really good. I did notice in him what I have seen in others who have been part of a profession for a long time -- seeing everything through a particular set of lenses. Eg, when he talks about changing the lives of 10 others, he thinks of military examples! I've observed lawyers seeing the world and situations through very peculiar lenses which leads to all kinds of bizarre conclusions. He also seems a bit uneducated - American Indians?? I think he means native Americans. And it's impossible to go for 6 days without sleep - he means 6 days with little sleep.
