Pretty good review - thank you. The rhythm section [Philip Lynott: vocals; bass & Brian Downey: drums] are 2/3 of the founder members of the group from Dublin, Ireland. Whereas the lead guitarists [Gary Moore & Scott Gorham] are from Belfast, Northern Ireland & Glendale CA, America. Gary was the major influence in the more Celtic feel to this record, especially with the closing track. You may have missed the producer was the legendary Tony Visconti. Nice one!

The bass player is (and always was) excellent from Lynott. Btw, Sarah is a lyric about Philip Lynott's baby daughter (with the music by Gary Moore). Even though Waiting For an Alibi was the most successful single, like you, I prefer Do Anything You Want To. Got To Give It Up is another example of the twin lead Gibson Les Paul guitars that Thin Lizzy perfected. It is a poignant lyric on addiction to drugs/drink. The best solo is the first by Scott and Gary does the outro. Btw Scott does S&M, but Gary does the intricate stuff on the Black Rose track. You can see why I rate this much more highly than Jailbreak, which is good but somewhat two-dimensional. But it was the album the woke up America to them.

The best way to hear their material until just before this album is to play the double live album from 1978, aptly named Live And Dangerous! This is also produced by Tony Visconti. It is often voted the second best live album after Deep Purple's Made In Japan. I concur with this.

If you have time to listen to The War of the Worlds concept album I recommended, Philip Lynott appears (vocals only) as a demented parson, lol!

  2. On the topic of the album Ember, this is my second favorite song and it makes a great anti-porn anthem. POSSIBLE SEIZURE WARNING

I've been getting into a lot of metal, noise and hardcore music lately. Electric Wizard's Dopethrone is a goddamn monster and it makes me want to crank out Sabbath-like tunes on my guitar. If anybody has any other suggestions for this kind of music (or anything, I'm looking for inspiration at this point), feel free to reply.

  4. They are more Sabbath then Sabbath. I recommend Sleep and True Widow for more sludge.

Wow. So much juicy good stuff here. I have only recently been attempting south american music with a foray into Brazil. I look forward to checking these out. Which one would you say is your favorite out of all of these latin american records?
Nice post mate. Very interesting. I can see why Alibi was the biggest single, easy listen for the metal audiences. While the opener is a little more nuanced. I have heard of Live And Dangerous but I found out that they over-dubbed on the record which kind of turned me off it. For best live album I would say 1. Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads) 2. Live At Leeds (The Who) 3. Europe 72 (Grateful Dead) 4. Where The Light Is (John Mayer). But that's just me.
Metal is a bit of a blind-spot for me, so I can't advice you well on that. There was some stuff recommended in this thread in the early pages though, I just listened to the judas priest album recommended on page 1 and it was a goodie.

Thanks mate. I just want to point out that my comments on Steely Dan and Thin Lizzy here^ are an effort on my part to be as restrained and as brief as I could manage because I could write pages about these artists and their artistry haha. :D

Lists are always great fun to debate. As I said, 'official' lists often have 1. Made In Japan (Deep Purple) 2. Live And Dangerous (Thin Lizzy) 3. Live At Leeds (The Who)... Yes, there have been accusations of that. From what I can ascertain, the source of these claims was from Tony Visconti of all people! It makes me wonder if it was a way of drawing attention to his 'work' as the producer. Notwithstanding, I can tell you that a young U2 (also from Dublin of course), viewed Live And Dangerous as a live template they sought to emulate. That was the sound they sought to replicate in their live shows.

Thin Lizzy were, in many respects, a live band. They came alive (no pun intended) on stage in a way they could seldom capture in the studio. One of their most famous outings was in Support of Queen in the US in 1977. That was the 25th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (current monarch) and it became known as the: The Queen Lizzy Tour, hahaha! :D From the journalists that reported on the tour, one band and then the other would have the ascendancy on different nights. None of them said 'they blew Queen off the stage', but they went toe to toe with them and, at times, they got their nose in front.

The twin guitar pairing at the time was the Scottish firebrand Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham. But the former had to be replaced for the tour because he got his hand glassed in a fight the night before they departed. Gary Moore (who would eventually replace him two years later for the Black Rose album and tour), stepped in overnight so they could still fulfil their commitments. I read a biography on Queen and during the tour Freddie would be going ape-shit, screaming, "Get that fucker off the stage!", hahaha. :p Anyway, @PMS I better stop reminiscing before I cannot stop. ;)

  7. My favorite record is "Génesis - En Un Planeta Lejano (1982)" as it's a perfect balance between electric sounds and natural sounds, yet the most worldwide recognized is "The Speakers - En El Mundo De Ingesón" as it's the "best" Psychedelic Rock album of this country and the most wanted colombian rock lp by collectionists, and some people say is one of the best lp's of Latin American Psychedelic Rock and a masterpiece. Anyways all the albums I posted are good and most are on youtube if not all. Take your time and listen to them when you can and find something you like!

I haven't seen a single list with Deep Purple at nr. 1. Usually it's Johnny Cash Folsom Prison, James Brown Live at The Apollo, or Allman Brothers at Fillmore East at nr 1. That's 9/10 lists. I forgot to mention Nirvana Unplugged for live album also. Definitely the second best after Stop Making Sense.

Thanks for the stories. I love that shit. By the way, what did you think of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie? I loved it. The critics didn't think it was gay enough.
I see. Thanks for the insight. I will definitely check it out. I will pick the first I can find on spotify. Some of them are bound to be on there, if not all of them.

You're welcome. :) I haven't seen it but the trailers were impressive. I could not see it at the cinema because my anxiety around others precludes such things. I expect I shall buy the DVD at some point. The reason I haven't done so already is I am fearful of being disappointed. There is a scene where Brian May is discussing the composition of We Will Rock You, in a timeline @ five years after the event! I am somewhat of a pedant about such things and I have heard that there are other liberties taken with the reality of what happened and when. But Malik's Mercury is extraordinary from what I have seen. :)

This one is a Psychedelic Rock obscure jewel. It's a pretty good album to be honest, and has a pretty decent bass in some songs.

The movie is not a suppose to be an exact representation of events but is instead trying to catch the essence of the music itself. I don't think anyone watching it actually thought it was 100% accurate. They have condensed events and merged several characters into one character to tell a more efficient story. And malik's performance is sensational.
Is it better than "At The Opera"?
    Cool. I will check it.
I haven't gotten into Jethro Tull yet. I've of course heard aqualung and the flute playing is very interesting.

Much better IMO. Of course, A Night At The Opera (1975) has Bohemian Rhapsody on it. :) But as an album, I believe the successor was far more accomplished.

    Great! :)

After a multi-tracked guitar part, there an instrumental intro and outro on the album using a Shepard tone harmonium figure. Very cool!

So you should listen to this one. Of course, if you really dig prog rock and don't mind hearing songs with more than 20 mins. Thick as a brick their magnum opus (in my opinion).
