I could see how completely getting rid of porn addiction could get you off meds but for me being on them was what allowed me to quit cold turkey. It limits the amount of stimulation should can feel and therefore how much horiness you can feel. Honestly feels a bit like cheating when I think about how crazily horny i was before the meds but hey thats what meds are for right?

    ^This is crap advice mate!

I could say to you:- there is always a reason for anger/paranoia issues and you shouldn't be on medication for that, ever!

Yep. Withdrawals can be very hard and I think the antidepressants can help on this point.

I don't think we are always depressed. If he thinks that, I don't think he knows what depression feels like. Are we almost always sad? Maybe, but not depressed.

I have never read/heard any clinician or clinical textbook claim that antidepressants cure depression. That is a bogus claim.

Of course it doesn't cure it. It's only a tool you use to stand on your feet while you try to discover the possible cure.

That's right Tarfk. No psychiatric medications cure anything, nor do doctors claim they do. They simply help to manage the illness(es) we have and ease the extremes of the symptoms we suffer from.

Well, two thirds diagnosed with major depression stay on pills for life at least in GB. Here is statistic. Antidepressants help 20 out of 100 people taking them at most. Antidepressants work well on patients whose serotonin levels are dangerously low (symptoms: they have no will to get up, speak, eat ect.). Such severe serotonin deficiency can be observed at 12-20% of patients diagnosed with major depression. For everyone else placebo is just as effective. If Aspirin had such poor performance rate lowering pain, it would be long gone.

Aren't most kinds of antidepressants made to target low seretonin? (I'm on the phone right now so I can't check that in detail). So it makes sense that it helps people with low levels of it. But what about the remaining 80%? If they have normal levels of serotonin why are they depressed? And are those people really depressed? Aren't they just sad maybe, and have been prescribed those meds by an irresponsible doctor? I've always though that lack of seretonin was the major cause of depression so those figures are a bit strange to me. I bet that a lot of people take shit that they don't really need, not only just antidepressants. The antibiotic problem comes to mind.
And on topic, NoFap helps a lot regarding mental health, and may even be the cure that your meds can't provide. Or it may not be enough, depends of course on each individual case. But it helps anyway for sure.

I completely agree. This is definition from wikipedia "The exact mechanism of action of SSRIs is unknown.[2]:20 They are believed to increase the extracellular level of the neurotransmitter serotonin by limiting its reabsorption (reuptake) into the presynaptic cell, increasing the level of serotonin in the synaptic cleft available to bind to the postsynaptic receptor. The efficacy of SSRIs in mild or moderate cases of depression has been disputed[4][5][6] and may be outweighed by side effects.[7]"

SSRIs do help people with serotonin deficiency. The problem is 99 % of SSRI are prescribed without doing simple blood and urine tests or better positron emission tomography (PET scans). It's like getting treatment for brain tumor without doing CT scans. Antidepressants should be prescribed only to max 20 % of people diagnosed with depression symptoms (8-12 % more likely). Pharmaceutical industry is pushing this drugs down our throats and healthcare institutions don't fight against it. don't get me wrong, I have nothing against SSRIs, but do serotonin tests before prescribing these drugs (they don't do it, because it's easier and cheaper to just prescribe pills. It's the same reason why CBT cognitive behavior therapy is not used before prescribing pills).

You have to understand this, a lot of us could be suffering from a spiritual disease. There was a time when you were well and healthy. God might have chosen you to suffer becoming lost so he can favour you above others and through the illness, bring you closer to him! A lot of great people became ill and found god through their experiences. They believed it was god that put them through it the whole time.

I take an antidepressant. Ive been diagnosed with major depression well before I got addicted to PMO though. I suggest quiting all hard drugs, even nicotine, and caffeine. It will keep you sharp and thinking clearly. Im sensitive to caffeine (a cup of strong coffee will have me paranoid and super anxious). I used to smoke half a cigarrette and it would give me headache at the back of my head where I got surgery a long time ago. That stuff is all bad for you. Listen to your body.
I dont really feel different while taking an antidepressant. When I forget to take it for a couple days (lifes been busy) I start to notice I get depressed and start ruminating on negative thoughts. Keep an eye out on how you feel and if doing something makes it worse then stop that.

I am confused. You talk about the situation here in Britain (but offer no references for your claim). But you quote from a US institute which acknowledges that "some of the information provided here is specific to the German health care system."

I was on Lexapro. 20mg's a Day. Coming off it was the worst then a few days later it got easier. I felt like it was making me happy artificially so that I couldn't feel what I was supposed to feel to get better. I think that if you're depressed there's a reason to be and feeling such a way may help you understand why. That's my opinion though.

OK, here is the biggest British meta study conducted on adults with major depressive disorder: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32802-7/fulltext

"All antidepressants were more effective than placebo, with ORs ranging between 2.13 (95% credible interval [CrI] 1·89–2·41) for amitriptyline and 1.37 (1·16–1·63) for reboxetine… (1.0=placebo)
    ...
The placebo response rate in depression consistently falls between 30 and 40%. Among more severely depressed patients antidepressants offer a clear advantage over placebo; among less severely depressed patients and those with a relatively short episode duration the placebo response rate is close to 50% and often indistinguishable from the response rate to antidepressants."

I'm not saying antidepressants don't work better than placebo, they clearly do for patients with major depressive disorder. The problem is 80% of people on antidepressants don't qualify for major depressive disorder diagnosis but are given antidepressants anyway. For them it would be way better to take sugar pills thinking they got SSRIs. There would at least be no side effects.

Here is Antidepressant Drug effects and Depression Severity: A Patient-Level Meta-Analysis study pointing that out:

"Medication vs placebo differences varied substantially as a function of baseline severity. Among patients with Hamilton scores below 23, Cohen’s d-type effect sizes for the difference between medication and placebo were estimated to be < .20 (a standard definition of a small effect). Estimates of the magnitude of the superiority of medication over placebo increased with increases in baseline Hamilton severity and crossed the NICE threshold for a clinically significant difference at a baseline score of 25.

    Conclusions
The magnitude of benefit of antidepressant medication compared with placebo increases with severity of depression symptoms, and may be minimal or nonexistent, on average, in patients with mild or moderate symptoms. For patients with very severe depression, the benefit of medications over placebo is substantial."

Well, I guess I am alright as my diagnosis is recurrent major depressive disorder. I take two antidepressants, which have made a significant difference to my ability to function from day to day. I can only speak from personal experience on this.

I take them and they have caused side effects including ED and low sex drive. That being said they are very good at helping me manage my depression. It’s a trade off.

Don't you think the ED is due to pornography?
