    Hey everyone,
Since we’re an exceptionally motivated group of people, I thought I would share this challenge with you all. Scott Adams, the creator of the famous ‘Dilbert’ cartoon strips, used written affirmations to achieve various goals that were incredibly difficult and unlikely to achieve. For example, he wrote “I will become a syndicated cartoonist” 15 times a day for at least six months (I don’t know how long exactly) until his cartoons began to be published in newspapers all across the U.S.

This might sound like some sort of magic, but it makes sense when you realize that you essentially internalize the goal you’re trying to achieve by repetitively writing it down. This is similar to how the “Gratitude Attitude Challenge” helps me have a more positive outlook on life.

So here’s what I want you all to do:
Write down a goal you want to achieve in a journal, sheet of paper, or even on this forum (NOT this thread!) 15 times a day for however many days it takes for you to achieve that goal. Scott Adams said doing this every day for at LEAST six months is key, but it doesn’t really matter where or how you do it. However, according to this article (https://medium.com/the-mission/35-things-no-one-ever-told-you-about-becoming-successful-387f91d36611), you might want to consider writing your goal in the present tense, e.g. stating "I am free from my addictions" instead of "I will overcome my addictions." In the end, just do whatever floats your boat; you can write down goals that are relatively easy to achieve and/or write down your goal thirty times a day. It's not like there's a study that shows the most effective way of attempting this.

Regardless of where you write your goal, post on this thread:
    - the day you started the challenge
    - the goal (if you feel comfortable doing so).

If you alter your goal, make sure you post:
    - the day you altered your goal
    - GOAL ALTERATION
    - the altered goal

Then, on the day you actually achieve that goal, post:
    - the date you achieved it
    - the goal
    - GOAL ACHIEVED
    - how many days it took for you to reach it (go here if you have trouble calculating it: https://www.convertunits.com/dates/)

    Example:
    July 16, 2018
    I will overcome my addictions.

    January 13, 2018
    I will overcome my addictions.
    GOAL ACHIEVED
    180 days

If you mess up or forget a day, don’t worry. What matters most is that you achieve the goal in the end. The road to success is rarely a straight one.

Good luck everyone! I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.

I will sell my android app for $20 millions.

I'm not so sure if affirmations should be in the future tense, I read somewhere that you should say it in the present tense, so I would recommend you to change your affirmation to something like "I am free from my addictions." and maybe I should change mine as well...

I read that too, but was struggling to find a way to rephrase it from “I will overcome...” without it sounding awkward. But thank you for your suggestion, I’m going to alter my goal now and edit my post because of it. And good luck with your app! Let me know when you reach your goal :)

    I am an awesome person!
I realized the root of my PMO addiction is essentially low self-esteem. I read a Reddit post about this and it really hit home with me. Letting go of perfectionism and my all-or-nothing attitude is something I’m going to work on. I actually have a paper due tomorrow but I’m going to frame my mind so That I don’t stress over the outcome but just live in the present.

Besides, the goal of PMO for me is to lead a life with more well-being, what better way to do that than to confront the initial problem, which is self esteem?

I am free from self-destructive behavior.
Yes, I know this is what I basically started out with. I took some time to think and concluded that this is what I should stick with. I don't think porn and video games are addictions, but symptoms of a deeper problem. For me, that is loneliness. Let's do this. I haven't been putting my best effort into this, and I'm sorry. I promise to try harder.

@potato bop, is it important to write these as affirmations, rather than the implicit "should" in a goal?
