Just diagnosed and it's all starting to make sense

I just came from the neurologist. Diagnosed with dystonia. It's a bit like Parkinson's and has been with me for decades. You can't relax certain muscle groups. I've been getting better since quitting PMO.

So here's the rub. Dystonia can be dopamine responsive. I think I have been self medicating with PMO my entire adult life. The only time I have been able to get the muscles to relax is after a PMO binge.

Getting ready for Botox to deal with the dystonia. Hopefully my doc can get this under control. Now I am serious about not relapsing into another dopamine binge cycle. She also thinks my anxiety is from dystonia and not the other way around.

I am now positive that PMO is an addictive cycle similar to heroine and many of the people here might be masking another condition with PMO.

    Thanks,
It was a bit of a bombshell, but it turns out very treatable so given the circumstances it's pretty good news. When you've been in pain your whole life while people are telling you to just relax and you find out that relaxing was nearly impossible it is a moment of clarity.

  4. How do you heal from dystonia? I feel like parts of my body are tight/stressed automatically

    Exactly,
I've been dealing with this my entire adult life and no one could give me an answer until luckily my doc referred me to one of the top neurologists on the west coast.

What's starting to work for me is practicing mindfulness which I used to think was Hocus pocus it promotes body awareness and is actually prescribed by my neurologist. Other things are I started smoking weed ( again under supervision and luckily I love in a legal state) I use the highest cbd I can find and toke just before bed. Also magnesium before bed helps the muscles relax. People with dystonia also have a much faster startle response and when they get tense unlike a normal person they muscles stay contracted for much longer. Weed helps with this too.
But the big one I'm waiting on insurance approval for is Botox. Nuero said it will relax the muscles so the nerves can heal.
After a lifetime of people telling you to just relax it's a huge whether off to know that it was almost impossible without treatment. I have almost gotten the spasms to go away but imagine recovering from intense wheightlifting for decades over the course of several months. I am now mostly just really sure on the affected side.

This sounds like a condition that I may have. Although I do suffer anxiety and am one of those people who read into everything and think I have every condition I read!! Plus I am only 28.

I’m not totally sure what dystonia entails but do get twitchy symptoms in the face and stinging sensations - again though I have always just put that down to anxiety.

I can only imagine that your symptoms would greatly improve if you stayed off PMO use. That and your medication will be a massive help. I’m glad you got it checked when you did before it got worse.

Hopefully now the only way for you (and also me) is up.

    Yep,

I had the same symptoms. Opthalmologists have constantly told me I just need time to adjust to new glasses. Glasses have killed me my entire life. Turns out it was from the dystonia. If you have a suspicion go see your doc and get referred to a neurologist. I waited for 2 decades thinking I had sinus issues and just needed to relax. Also I'm seriously considering becoming a Bhuddist at this point. Meditation is a huge help.

Thanks man. I have a GP appointment 22nd Aug, I will chat with them then.

I’m glad you were diagnosed at least you know about it now and can take action and treat it rather than let it continue. I send my prayers to you that from here you get much better, as well as continue the strength not to pmo.

    Thanks,

Funny thing is that I've only really started improving since being on a good streak. I'm positive it's the dopamine hits that make it even worse if you have a neuro problem.

  10. I’d advocate for weed. Try a lot 20:1 cbd:thc ratio. It’ll give you a very very light weed buzz so you can relax further. But for Botox, to relax muscle, I think if that part of your body that is being tense/botoxed, if you’re still tense, another part of your body may compensate tension for that one botoxed part. Just thinking, anyone kno anything more on ththe subject?

That's what I'm afraid of. I just found out about a Dr that does nuero plasticity training for dystonia and has had really good results.
